Gutter Maintenance Tips for Utah's Four Seasons

From spring cottonwood season to winter freeze-thaw cycles, Utah's seasons put unique demands on your gutter system. Here's what to do — and when.

Spring: Clear Winter Damage and Cottonwood

Spring is the most important season for gutter maintenance in Utah. After winter, gutters may have debris from freeze-thaw expansion, hanger displacement from ice weight, and loose connections. As cottonwood season arrives in May-June, gutters fill rapidly with fluffy seeds. We recommend a spring cleaning after cottonwood season ends — typically late June — to clear the season's debris and flush downspouts before summer monsoon storms. Spring is also the time to check for freeze-thaw damage to seams and hangers.

Summer: Post-Monsoon Inspection

Utah's summer monsoon pattern — typically July-September — brings heavy afternoon thunderstorms that can overwhelm gutters clogged with cottonwood debris. After the first major monsoon storms, inspect gutters for overflow marks or debris buildup. Trim any overhanging branches that deposit debris directly into your gutters. Check that downspout extensions are positioned correctly to direct water away from your foundation.

Fall: The Pre-Winter Cleanout

Fall gutter cleaning — typically October-November — is the second essential maintenance window. After leaves drop and before consistent freezing temperatures arrive, clear all leaf debris from gutters and downspouts. A clogged gutter going into winter will hold water that freezes and expands, stressing hanger connections and seams. Check your gutter pitch — gutters should slope toward downspouts, not develop low spots that hold standing water.

Winter: Freeze-Thaw Cycle Preparation

Utah winters bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles that stress your gutter system. Snow on the roof melts during warmer daytime temperatures and refreezes at night, creating heavy ice loads in and around your gutters. Full gutters trap this freezing water and put significant stress on hangers and fascia boards. The most important winter preparation is entering the cold season with completely clean, properly pitched gutters and clear downspouts. Never use a metal tool to chip ice from gutters — you'll damage the material. Use a roof rake from the ground to clear snow near the roof edge.
